Nick Thompson recently sat down with Sam Caplin of Proelite.com. They went over a variety of topics including his situation with Bodog Fight, a proposed fight with Jon Fitch and his impressions of training partner
Brock Lesnar. Below are some of the highlights of their conversation.
Thompson On Fighting With Bodog Fight:
Right now I'm really unhappy with the direction they are going in. When they first got into the game they got [Matt] Lindland, Fedor [Emelianenko], Amar Suloev, Sonnen, [Trevor] Prangley, and I was fighting with some of the best fighters in the world and that's what I want to be a part of. Recently their new model has been to rent out other shows and just put one or two fights on there just to get the taping rights and air those fights in order to cut costs.
From what they tell me it's just a short-term plan and they are doing it in order to establish themselves and maintain longevity but it's something that worries me and it's something that if it continues that I'm just not going to be a part of. I've gotten to a point in my career where I want to fight top guys.
Thompson On Being Offered A Fight With Jon Fitch In The UFC:
They actually called me about the [Jon] Fitch fight but they wanted me to sign right away and I can't sign anything until February 2. I would have taken it because to fight Jon Fitch on the main card (at UFC 82) is a huge opportunity but I wasn't able to take it, unfortunately.
Thompson On Training With Brock Lesnar:
When he first came in, one of his sparring partners didn't show up so I agreed to fill in. And I'm weighing 200 (pounds) at this point, so I'm fairly big. Not his size by any means, but he hadn't been boxing at all and I've gone with plenty of heavyweights before and know that they're slow. Even good heavyweights that can move fast and can stick and move. So I said, "I'll fill-in for ya." So I went to jab, which is my best punch by far, and he went to jab and his was quicker than mine. So I'm like, "Okay, I'm in some trouble here." Well, I get inside and use head movement and kind of dirty box with him.
So I get inside and he throws a hook -- and I fully covered the hook, and it still sent me half-way across the ring. So now I'm really like, "Aw, I don't know what to do. So I guess I'll set up a shot." So I throw a one-two and I shoot in and get nice and deep on his leg, and that bastard kneed me on the back of the head! Which, you know, the guy is 60 pounds heavier than me and kneeing me in the back of the head at practice.
